The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Players are granted the ability to contest certain rulings made by the official, mirroring the system already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This move follows just a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a player can request.
A Recent Example
A recent case took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
