Around 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's city of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Automobiles, walls and postal boxes were defaced, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they reported in a release.
Police report they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a man noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored fluid.
The fluid had been applied in the form of a banned symbol, they added.
Law enforcement then found multiple other smeared automobiles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under regulations banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police state initial examinations indicate the fluid was probably human blood.
"There is still no indication as to its origin; investigators are currently not aware of any physical harm in association with the occurrence," they commented.
City officials announced they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the community for information.
An important political figure commented the attack left him speechless and had to be addressed rapidly.
"This event strikes at the core of Hanau and revives the trauma of the right-wing violent incident in 2020," he stated on online, referring to the murder of nine people by a assailant focusing on people of foreign heritage in 2020.
