Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who come off popular slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People purchasing these medications must be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Doctors believe the way of the injections accounts for the heightened weight return.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

People who have come off the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced something that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," described an individual.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Use

Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is greater among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural support.
