This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

We present a dare for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like conventional body horror, but beneath Together exists a deep contemplation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the two stars infuse a unique chemistry to their characters, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The plot begins when the couple transition from the metropolis to the country for Millie’s job. A familiar narrative setup, sure, but that’s primarily where the cliches conclude. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim tumble into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the duo. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, blending moments of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but never too gross) body horror, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and delivers them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and distant from his network of friends. He fears the notion of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is amplified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie never makes one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

The couple face the kind of problems that arise in long-term unions a decade in. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor avoids being hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the ending sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can embark on right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu at present.
