A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship government projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency ended the prior year. This project was closely associated with his government's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in national works. They were completed at an rapid pace, beating predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had also sparked ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an prompt pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."

In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in complete accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital undertakings.
