Matteo Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Brilliance in Silver Lining for Struggling Lazio

The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had allowed a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Falling Apart?

Was the team's progress coming unstitched, or did there exist any cohesion maintaining its structure to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager in the summer transfer window, before he publicly stated that the club had omitted to inform him about a registration embargo they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Speculation that he might quit were without basis, but he stated that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic on the pitch as behind the scenes, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to determine if progress is being made or imploding.

Cancellieri's Unexpected Comeback

A single player kept smiling throughout. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to feature for Lazio this year. He completed the last one on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were pushing for him to remain there temporarily. The transfer ban forced a rethink. They were unable to thin their squad lacking backup options.

He joined initially under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances for Lazio in 2022-23, the vast majority of those from the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who left after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri would be a star but then not selecting him."

Discovering His Best Role

Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to determine the specific characteristics of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as a flank player on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself the majority of that term as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile as center forward. In 63 appearances on loan at Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
