'Sweet game'
The prosecutor, presenting evidence, detailed the criminal behavior to the legal proceedings.
She explained his targets were children from difficult backgrounds who were staying at a summer program which he managed.
Ruben played a "treat game" with the minors, the legal counsel said, in which he would go into the children's bedrooms when they were settling down and request they to consume candy "rapidly".
She informed the proceedings Ruben had played this game with the young males "for many years", and children had previously fallen ill the next day.
She explained Ruben had been capable of justifying this repeatedly as the children being "overstimulated by activities", until his family member had worries in summer 2025.
Mrs Prior KC continued: "Recently" his stepson had suspicions about the activities, justifiably.
"They resolved" to examine in the man's possessions."
Mrs Prior KC said objects including infant oil, Vaseline and syringes were located, and his stepchild alerted the authorities about his suspicions.
She explained the defendant went on to engage in the "candy game" with six children that time - that Saturday - and they were all sick the following morning.
"Law enforcement" had not arrived by that time," she added.
The oversight body, the investigative body, earlier informed that it was investigating Leicestershire Police's handling of the incident.
Mrs Prior explained the youngsters were unable to walk properly due to their condition, so the stepson contacted the police a second time.
She stated Ruben then engaged in the "sweet game" in a space of five minors.
