European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In other legal developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to cut security grants to local governments which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge ruled the action was “another example” of tying federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to New Orleans prior to the new year, coinciding with an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to accept a limited number of migrants from the US in return for additional aid, after signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit seeking the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known cultural institution in the capital.

Experts point out that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy actions.
